The Gendang Weekly Digest #26

Happenings from our scene this past week…

A Debut to Remember

A belated but deserved congratulations we wish to Chong Keat-aun who snagged the Best New Director honours at the recent Golden Horse Awards in Taipei for his feature debut, “The story of Southern Islet”. The film is about a Chinese couple who live near the Malaysia-Thailand border and was only recently released in Taiwan. Congrats again!

Disney Dreams Do Come True!

And of course, a huge thumbs-up as well for Ahmad Izham Omar, now the former Media Prima top exec and legendary music producer (and Gendang contributor) for landing the executive director of content & creative position at Disney’s streaming service, Disney+. You can read his thoughts on this new journey written exclusively for Gendang HERE.

Gig of the Year Postponed (Again)

The new norm is having cool stuff taken away from us. The much-anticipated Search and Awie concert which was slated for 12 December has been postponed yet again (it was originally planned for earlier in the year). But the gig which is now dubbed ‘Projek Bikin Wilayah 2021’ will take place on 13 February 2021 at Stadium Malawati. Hopefully… so do watch this space.

This Week’s New Album

After teasing us with a couple of singles that we simply loved before, pop-punk outfit from Damansara, Pasca Sini finally drop the whole payload, their debut album entitled ‘Emo Department’. Comprising eight BM and four English tunes, Pasca Sini take us on a fun and rockin’, yet interspersedly contemplative, emo journey perfect for these uncertain times.

This Week’s New Single

Ah, the guitar hook, the breathy vocals, the irreverence in execution; how can you not like this brilliant new single, ‘The Empty Notion’ by Putrajaya neo-psychedelia outfit, Golden Mammoth? So, just sit back, and hit play…
