A 4th of July Special
Safe to say, ‘Standing in the Eyes of the World’ by rock queen Ella is one those local songs that almost every Malaysian can easily hum since its release in 1998 for the KL Commonwealth Games. The Wah Idris composition has also been re-recorded and rearranged for various occasions when a dash of patriotism is needed. The latest, the American Embassy in Malaysia released a new version of the melodious anthem as part of a “special cultural diplomacy collaboration” for its 4th of July Independence Day Celebrations. It features Ella herself, Zee Avi, instrumentalist Mohar and a group of gifted alumni of American Music Abroad programmes. Hum away!
Awards for BoBoiBoy
Malaysian animated film ‘BoBoiBoy Movie 2’ snagged two awards at the Laurus Film Festival in Russia recently for Best Photo/Poster and Best Trailer/Teaser. The film itself was a critical and commercial success last year with an astounding box-office collection of more than RM27 million.
And One for Upin & Ipin Too!
Yes, local animation is indeed creating global waves and the accolades keep coming. Les’ Copaque Production YouTube channel has been awarded with the Diamond Creator Award by YouTube for hitting the 10 million subscriber mark. Powered by the popular series ‘Upin & Ipin”, this is the first time a Malaysian YouTube channel has achieved this incredible milestone. Oh yes, it’s true!

After the unexpected delay of some three months, the year’s most anticipated album, ‘ManifestaSITI2020’ by Dato’ Sri Siti Nurhaliza was finally released recently. Parading a powerhouse lineup of composers including Aubrey Suwito, Omar K, Hael Husaini, Ezra Kong, Pown Hasril and Melly Goeslow, this is Siti’s 18th studio album and was sold out once it was opened for pre-order. We expected nothing less.
